Becomming a VE

If you have an Amateur Extra license, I would be happy to sponsor you as a W5YI Volunteer Examiner.

• Review the following documents:
  • The W5YI Application Cover Letter.
  • The W5YI VE Manual.
  • Subpart F of the FCC Part 97 Rules & Regulations.
• Complete and sign the first page of the W5YI VE Application Form.
• Email your signed application to me, along with a signed copy of your amateur radio license. I will complete and sign the second page, and forward this to W5YI.
• Once your VE Application is approved by W5YI and you receive your W5YI VE Number, you will need to Setup an ExamTools account.

How my team works:

• Members of my team receive a Doodle Poll each Wednesday morning listing potential sessions (each two hours long), and giving team members the opportunity to sign up for one or more sessions.
• I then schedule sessions only if a minimum of four VEs (three others in addition to myself) have signed up, to ensure that there are a sufficient number of VEs available to conduct the session.
• On Friday evening, I schedule the sessions for the following week.
• Team members and candidates can view a list of upcoming sessions.
• All team members receive an invitation to all of my sessions, but except for those who have signed up in advance, there is no obligation to participate in any session. So, VEs are free to decide at the last minute to sign in to any session if they wish.
• Zoom invitations are emailed to team members 20 minutes prior to the scheduled start time, to allow VEs to join the session before candidates begin to arrive, and to discusss any logistics issues.
• Zoom invitations are emailed to candiates 5 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. This makes it easier to admit VEs to the session prior to admitting candidates.
